Cystoscopy is a procedure performed by a urologist to evaluate a patient's bladder, urethra, and prostate. In this procedure, a cystoscope (thin, telescope-like tube with a light and tiny camera attached) is inserted into the bladder through the urethra (tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body).

This allows the urologist to identify:

  • Stones
  • Polyps
  • Tumors
  • Prostatic enlargement
  • Other anatomical disorders of the lower urinary tract

Cystoscopy may be used to evaluate and diagnose the following conditions:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Pelvic pain
  • Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Painful urination
  • Urinary blockage (e.g., enlarged prostate [BPH], narrowing of the urinary tract [stricture], polyps, tumors)
  • Urinary incontinence or overactive bladder
  • Urinary stones

It is often necessary to perform a cystoscopy in order to evaluate patients with blood in their urine (a condition known as hematuria). Cystoscopy is also performed to remove stents in patients who have undergone hospital-based urological procedures.

There are two methods of performing a cystoscopy. One method utilizes a flexible scope, while the other method utilizes a rigid scope.

  • Rigid cystoscopy is often performed in the hospital with patents under anesthesia.
  • Flexible cystoscopy is more often employed in the office since it is more comfortable for patients. If necessary, a small amount of sedation is administered to help with patient comfort.
