The Prostate

The prostate gland is located in the pelvis, below the bladder, above the urethral sphincter and the penis, and in front of the rectum. It is normally the size of a walnut and surrounds the tube (urethra) through which you pass your urine. It produces the liquid (semen) part of your ejaculate, which is added to your sperm during sex.

Male patients typically begin to have prostate screenings at the age of 50. Urologists do a variety of common office procedures and screenings to ensure there are no prostate abnormalities. These include:
  • DRE- Digital Rectal Exam- A urologist digitally examines the surface of the prostate for abnormalities in size or consistency.
  • PSA – Prostatic Specific Antigen. Some abnormalities of the prostate will cause an elevated PSA blood test
  • Free PSA-
  • CAT Scan-Computed Tomography
  • Bone Scan
  • Prostate Biopsy

Prostate Biopsy

In certain cases, a urologist will determine that a prostate biopsy is necessary to rule out prostate cancer. The biopsy is performed with the patient lying on his side. A biopsy needle, similar to one used to draw blood or administer injections, is inserted into the prostate. A probe, guided by trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS), is inserted into the rectum to help the physician properly place the needle, which is projected through the tip of the probe. A cell sample is extracted from one or several areas of the prostate into the syringe.

What They Do

Our board-certified pathologist reads prostate biopsy and urine cytology slide samples to rule out a diagnosis of a cancerous tumor.

The biopsy sample(s) is examined under a microscope for cells or groups of cells that are markedly different from healthy tissue.

The specimen is obtained in the office, and results are typically available within 7-10 working days.

Why They Do It

There are several benefits to having an in-house pathology lab. By having a board certified pathologist read the slides on site, our office has increased control over the specimen; as we have strict quality control standards in place. This also allows for a faster turn around time on test results compared to those using an outside laboratory.

This further improves patient care at Urology Associates:

  • Our office can more effectively coordinate our patient's health care as a whole because of increased pathologist and urologist office interaction.
  • The pathologist has immediate access to your doctor, and can speak to them regarding your results.
  • Your doctor receives a comprehensive picture (from the patient's medical history, office examination, and office procedures) of the necessary steps in providing complete urological care.
